The Mae Trio (from the album Take Care Take Cover)

Sisters Maggie and Elsie grew up playing in a family band with Rigby clan vacations including music festivals as destinations. Anita played in orchestras, jazz ensembles, and string quartets under the guidance of Mr. and Mrs. Hillman with her mother’s classical piano training and her dad a fan of Folk music. Together, the three young women formed The Mae Trio in Melbourne, Australia, using their history to offer a unique take on Folk music with the multiple instrumentation of Maggie Rigby (banjo, ukulele, guitar and vocals), Elsie Rigby (violin, ukulele and vocals), and Anita Hillman (cello, bass and vocals). Take Care Take Cover, the second album from The Mae Trio, sticks to Folk tradition (“Sweet as Honey”) as it touches on Chamber Folk (“Only Ever Growing”), Folk Pop (“Haul Away”), and Country Soul (“Call Me Stranger”).

The recording for Take Cate Take Cover took The Mae Trio from their home in Australia to Nashville, Tennessee, welcoming guests such as Maya De’Vitry (The Stray Birds), Darrell Scott, Jano Rix and others into the Erik Jaskowiak-produced effort. The journey was chronicled by Maggie who recalled that ‘the day after we arrived in for four days in the third highest snowfall in Nashville on record. As three Australians who had never been snowed in anywhere this was a huge thrill! The slightly isolated location of the studio also gave us the space and peace to record something that was sincerely and completely ourselves’. Take Care Take Cover floats three voices like the breezes that blow through the story line of “Skye”, puts a brisk beat under a song for “Mr. Moon”, and hushes to tell a small-town tale with “Grandma’s”. The Mae Trio ride a train track groove into “Well Enough Alone” as they let their voices exercise with vocal gymnastics to “Parallel Park” and gently drift as currents that carry “Waterlliy”
